All the Wrong Answers

Good day all!

It was this article that led me to write this post. I recommend taking a few moments to read through it.

I'll begin by saying something very simple: ANY LAW THAT ENDS WITH "AND THEN YOU CAN KILL THE BABY" IS NOT A PRO-LIFE LAW, SHOULD NOT BE SUPPORTED BY PRO-LIFERS, AND AMOUNTS TO A COMFORTABLE COMPROMISE TO CONTINUE ABORTION AND NOTHING MORE.

For example: You must...
  • obtain an ultrasound
  • visit a counselor
  • notify your parents
  • read a pamphlet
  • sign a form
  • administer pain killers to the baby
  • wait 24 hours
  • have a certain procedure
  • jump through a hoop
  • hop on one foot
  • close your eyes and think really hard

... AND THEN you can kill the baby.

Now tell me, did any of those rules result in anything except a dead child? How pro-life, really, are these laws? So Mr. Colson asking us to rejoice over the fact that a number of states are considering laws that will result in dead babies isn't really a reason to rejoice, is it?

Want to know what is missing from Mr. Colson's article? Personhood. Mr. Colson doesn't mention the word even once. The one thing that will end the debate once and for all is not advocated or presented as a reason to have hope by Mr. Colson. Instead he, and many like him, want you to jump for joy at laws that will result in dead babies.

The only question is: Have you been fooled by this thinking?

I spent some time this afternoon searching around the inter-webs and found many passionate defenses of incrementalist abortion laws. Usually it fell along these lines: "If you could save 12 Jews in the Holocaust, wouldn't you do it?"

In logic, this is called a Red Herring. A Red Herring is an argument that sounds like it answers the question at hand, but really does not. The question isn't "Should we save some babies if we have the opportunity?" Of course we should, no one is arguing that point. Instead, the question is "Should our laws restrict abortion, but still allow it to remain legal?" Or you could ask: "Are there any circumstances where Abortion should be legal?"

The answer to those last questions is, for anyone who wants to respect life; NO.

Yet, all we hear from many pro life groups is that we should work towards making abortion harder. This is why I said to you in my post on Roe v. Wade's 39th Anniversary:

" Join a group dedicated to stopping abortion and be a blessing to them. And join a REAL group that does something REAL to end abortion. Not some group that has luncheons and banquets and gives out stupid awards all the time or runs weak ads on the Christian stations."

No my friends, we should NOT work to make abortion harder. . . we should work towards making Abortion Illegal.

It really. . . REALLY. . . is that simple.
